There are a myriad of factors that can lead to tooth loss, but the truth is that most people will lose some of their adult teeth at some point in their lives. That being said, there are a lot of strategies that the average person can implement to minimize their risk of tooth loss. Today we’ll take a closer look at some of the most common causes behind tooth loss and how to avoid them.

Accidents

Accidents are easily the most common reason behind the loss of an adult tooth. From a vehicular accident to a slip & fall scenario or an occupational injury, the reality is that accidents do happen. While our teeth are durable, they are designed to exert force when chewing. Accidental impacts from other directions can cause our teeth to break relatively easily.

Unfortunately, accidents (by definition) are also the most difficult to prevent. The best way to avoid an accident is to follow the suggested safety protocols for whatever activity you are participating in. That means buckling your seatbelt when driving a car, wearing a helmet when riding a bike, etc.

Physical Contact

Physical contact can be anything from a fist fight to contact sports. The truth is there is risk when participating in contact sports like boxing, football or hockey. The best way to mitigate that risk is to wear the proper safety equipment. That means mouthguards and helmets, even when practising.

Medical Reasons

From tooth decay to gum disease there are many medical issues that can lead to tooth loss. Dentists will do everything they can to save a tooth, but often one or many teeth need to be removed for the health of the rest of the mouth. It’s important to consider the health of your mouth, and not get caught up in the aesthetics of a missing tooth. There are many different options available to replace missing teeth.

Tooth loss is nothing to be ashamed of. No matter the reason, sometimes it’s better for a person’s overall health to have a tooth removed. Take the advice of medical professionals and prioritize oral health.
